The blacksmiths with skillful steps and inventive, as primitive instruments, for centuries have created cutting objects.
The Ancient forge Lenarduzzi is the last forge along the river of the irrigation ditch, that from the fteenth century until 1970s has powered about ten of Forge, that now they are disused.
The Forge of Campagna was consider for centuries the house of Lenarduzzi’s family who, from father to son have been handed down secrets and technique to forging and quenching steel: someone taught craft to Celeste, who bequeathed her art to Giuseppe, Marino’s father; he was the sons teacher.
The Ancient forge Lenarduzzi is a tribute to people who have dedicated their lives working for a hard and backbreaking job, exploited like animals without enjoying a right of acknowledgment for their actions.
The Lenarduzzi are nowadays the “anonymous contemporaries” of the labour that others have taken merits.
The Forge, a dark and cold place in winter and hot in summer, has kept closed inside for passion and loveto continue the activity. At this particular moment in time which values of life are very rare, have maintained the traditions which have made my town important in the world.this is why I wanted to dedicate the name of my small reality to Lenarduzzi and actually to my country..
The tools used to work are still used now, they are very fascinating… every tool that I use has a history of centuries, in a dialect name. Whenever a job requires it, for centuries it forges a new pincer, a new “forge steel plug” and then that is placed beside that of their ancestors. On the oor, near the mallet1, under the anvil, you can be found dozen of “plugs” which seem unimportant pieces of iron. In e ect those pieces are secular and even today I use them for drilling the white-hot steel.
Each tool has a speci c purpose a certain moment when they can be used. Only those who use them know how to search between the slag and dust the plugs required to make the hole for that particular tool.
The Forge is a real museum, which still works.
Water, is the energy that powers the Forge. The ditch of Maniago was made centuries ago, just to spin the blades that set in motion the ywheel transmitting the motion mallets and bucks. When inside the Forge carries the water to the turbine, a long pin, which runs through the rooms, starts to turn: that’s how old machine are activated, starting by using a “cenglon” (belt). In Ancient Forge everything still works in this way.
The art of blacksmith of Maniago still refers to the ability of the person who has the task to “pull” the mallet. The hammer, while presenting its di culties in using, minimizes the possibility of error and so without having to throw the work piece: this was something unacceptable fty years ago.
Immediately, with the mallet called “testa d’asino” they tried to overcome the slowness of the forge, the hammer and of the anvil. From here it emerges the important gure in the anvil: the one who pulled1, he pulled more precise, fast and without error. New techniques and steps were born, speci c “plugs” for di erent phases and each Forge selected one or two people who forged the pieces to other blacksmiths that they will complete and quenching the tools.
The hold mallet is not easy to control by force, you have to reduce or increase the force, depending on the need for a strong blow or read. The foot is still rarely, after learns hot to let go the hammer more or less fast.
According to various operations you replace the plugs which go expertly sharpened and calibrated into its seat. The hammer 75 kg must know how forge a nail in a few seconds (a few cm), in a few minutes must know how to forge a hatchet.
The Maniago irrigation creek was built centuries ago to spin the blades, providing motion to the ywheel which transmit motion to the heavy mallets and “leapfrog mole” (a large, traditional grinding wheel for sharpening).
